The Department of Buddhist Studies was established in 1957 as follow up to the action initiated by the Government of India on the occasion of the celebration of 2500 years of Buddhism on 24 May 1956.

The history of the Department of Sanskrit, DU begins with the history of the University itself. The Department came into existence in 1922 when the University had come into existence.

Department of Slavonic & Finno-Ugrian Studies

The Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies is the only Department in India which offers courses in Slavonic languages namely Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian and Hungarian from the Finno-Ugrian group of languages.

Department of Psychology

Psychology at the Master’s level was introduced in Delhi University in 1957 under the Department of Philosophy and Psychology.

Department of Philosophy

This Department began as a combined Department of Philosophy and Psychology in the year 1953. The Department of Psychology became independent in 1962. Since then the Department of Philosophy is an Autonomous Department.

The Department of Indian Languages and Literary Studies was established in the year 1961.

Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics was started in 1963 with Dr. Chandrasekhar as its head. Only a diploma course in Linguistics was offered in the beginning. The Master’s and Doctoral programmes were later introduced in 1966 when the noted Indian linguist Professor P.B. Pandit joined the Department.

The Department of English has the same year of inception as the University of Delhi, 1922. The Department offers degrees at MA, MPhil and PhD levels and oversees undergraduate teaching at the 79 Colleges which are affiliated to the University
